Law Reform

Overview

Law Reform is about trying to develop a fairer justice system that better responds to our clients' needs. Often, we can become actively involved with law reform projects because of the legal problems our clients are having.

Law Reform projects can include:

  • looking at the legal cases we’ve done to find ways in which the law and legal system can be improved
  • doing research into the law in other jurisdictions (ie. outside of Victorian or Australian law)
  • developing proposals to change laws and/or legal practices
  • giving the public information and encouraging people to talk about the issues
  • starting actions and campaigns about changing the law or about social justice issues
  • responding to what work the government is or isn’t doing, and
  • responding to government and other inquiries and reviews.

More information

Visit the different websites of our CLCs to see what Law Reform work is being done across individual centres. You can also use the Find a Local CLC or Find a Specialist CLC page to find the websites.

The Federation of Community Legal Centres, as the peak body for CLCs in Victoria, also holds a number of working groups, which are made up of staff from member organisations. The working groups look at various Law Reform issues and prepare appropriate responses and campaigns. To find out more, see the Federation's Law Reform section and working groups sections.
