How the Legal Service Operates
Monash University Law students enrolled in the final year subject "Professional Practice" interview the Legal Service's clients and furnish legal advice under the close supervision of an experienced and qualified solicitor. Students also undertake follow-up work such as drafting letters, wills and court documents, negotiating with another party and keeping the client informed about file progress.
This process gives students the opportunity to further their legal training by gaining invaluable practical experience. It also performs the important community function of providing a free legal service.
Interviews are conducted in 45 minute appointment time slots during various sessions throughout the week (see Opening Hours for more information). It is important to remember that Monash-Oakleigh Legal Service is run by appointment only and legal problems cannot be discussed over the telephone. Appointments can be made by phoning (03) 9905 4336 during normal business hours.
