General Legal Advice

Legal advice for new clients is provided on Monday evenings and daytime for existing clients or people with access and equity needs.

Monday to Thursday by appointment only. Our office is closed to the public on Fridays.

We will generally provide representation for low-income people in:

  • Victims of Crime Assistance applications
  • Minor criminal and police matters
  • Divorces (if you can't speak English and are unable to fill in the forms yourself)
  • Intervention Orders
  • Fines
  • Social Security disputes
  • Neighbourhood Disputes (Fences, Trees etc)

We provide general advice and referral but not representation in the following areas:

  • Consumer complaints
  • Complaints against lawyers/doctors
  • Neighbourhood disputes
  • Property disputes
  • Insurance disputes
  • Tenancy matters
  • Employment issues including discrimination.

We provide general advice to low-income people in most areas of law, except:

  • commercial matters or any dispute which arose in the course of business
  • financial investments such as trusts
  • conveyancing
  • probate
  • witnessing of bank documents
  • Immigration
  • Personal injuries
  • We are unable to provide legal assistance in any matter where the individual or organisation is in a position to fund a private solicitor.

If you have a family law or criminal matter and are eligible for Legal Aid, we will assist you with your application and refer you to a private lawyer who will act for you and be paid by Legal Aid.

If you have had a motor vehicle accident or have a debt, we will assist you to try to negotiate a settlement, but will not act for you in court proceedings.

We do prepare simple straight forward Wills and Powers of Attorney. If your will is more complex we will refer you to a private solicitor.

The decision as to whether we assist you and the extent of the assistance is up to us.

If we take on your case, our work will be free but you will be expected to cover external costs such as Freedom of Information application fees, court fees and medical reports.
