Statement of Purpose

The SouthPort Community Legal Service was created to:

• provide a free legal advice, assistance and referral service to the people of South Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Garden City, Albert Park and Middle Park, and
• promote the provision of legal aid, and
• promote community awareness of the law and to encourage community participation in the legal process, and
• promote and advocate for equal opportunity in the legal system, and
• assist the people of South Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Albert Park and Middle Park in any way the Committee thinks appropriate.

The Service's aim is to help the people of South Melbourne, Port Melbourne, Garden City, Albert Park and Middle Park and (resources permitting) anyone else who seeks its help. It attempts to do this in as non-threatening a manner as possible and in a way that leaves people as free and well informed as possible in their decision-making on legal issues. To this end we try to ensure that our clients have the assistance of a non-lawyer whenever they consult a lawyer at the Service.
