Rights and responbilities of Western suburbs legal service
Western Suburbs Legal Service Rights:
- To expect unpaid workers to fulfil the tasks they have committed themselves to
- To expect honesty and accountability from unpaid workers
- To have respect of work environment, equipment, etc
- To decline workers who may be unsuitable
- To expect unpaid workers to adhere to confidentiality guidelines
- To expect that unpaid workers be members of the legal service and to attend management committee meetings at least twice yearly
- To expect unpaid workers, when representing the legal service, to present a positive image of the agency and be consistent with policies and philosophies of the agency
- To expect unpaid workers to undertake initial and ongoing training.
Western Suburbs Legal Service Responsibilities:
- To plan for the use of unpaid workers so that they know they are appreciated and being effective
- To provide clear job descriptions
- To respect the value of unpaid workers
- To give encouragement and constructive feedback to unpaid workers
- That ensure that every staff member accepts and respects unpaid workers as co-workers
- To provide adequate training, supervision and policies
- To recognise that unpaid workers may have to reschedule times due to other commitments and obligations
- To encourage unpaid workers to participate in the decision making processes
- To provide insurance and (ideally) reimburse travel and child care costs for unpaid workers
- To provide a reference that reflects unpaid worker's contributions to the agency
- To provide a forum for conflict resolution
- To provide unpaid workers with tasks appropriate to their capabilities and authority
- To provide an orientation package for unpaid workers
Supervision:
It is expected that an experienced worker will be rostered on with a new worker to provide supervision and additional on-the-job training. At other times unpaid workers may be expected to work with limited supervision.
