MEDIA RELEASE
‘Ability Beyond Disability’
As part of Law Week, Disability Discrimination Legal Service will be conducting a presentation and discussion on Disclosing Disability in Employment at Ross House.
We all have a right to work. Having a job is basic to a person’s dignity and well being. It is fundamental in creating an identity, increasing confidence, developing skills, building relationships and networks.
Access to employment is a right protected under the Victorian and Federal equal opportunity laws. Under these laws a person with a disability who meets genuine requirements of a job has the same right to be appointed as anyone else.
Irrespective of legal protection, disclosing a disability can be a problematic for people with disabilities. Many job seekers and employees do not disclose their disability to recruiters and employers because they fear discrimination or exclusion from consideration for jobs.
Although disclosing a disability is ultimately a personal question that is bound by each person’s unique set of circumstances there are many questions to consider such as:
- Why should I disclose my disability?
- Do I have to disclose my disability during job interview?
- What if I get a job without disclosing my disability but my condition changes over time?
Find out what you need to know to help you decide if you should disclose a disability to a current or potential employer and if so when and how to do it.

Date: Wednesday 14 May
