Jobs in CLCs

Making a real difference

Community legal centres offer the chance to perform rewarding social justice and human rights work in a dynamic environment. Working in a community legal centre is about making a real difference to people’s lives through the law.

Community legal centres provide opportunities to be involved in a range of justice work including legal advice and representation, community legal education and policy and law reform work aimed at developing a fairer legal system that better responds to the needs of the disadvantaged.

As well as a broad range of stimulating and challenging work, community legal centre positions can offer flexible work hours, regular professional development opportunities and generous charity tax benefits through salary packaging (essentially making part of your salary tax free).

Work in community legal centres requires dedication, innovation, resourcefulness, a commitment to excellence, great communication skills and a passion for social justice.

Articled clerk / law graduate positions

While there are regular opportunities for qualified lawyers in Victorian community legal centres, positions for law graduates are currently limited.

Both Fitzroy Legal Service and the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre annually recruit an articled clerk, however there are currently no other articled clerk programs in community legal centres in Victoria.

Law graduates interested in undertaking legal practice work in a community legal centre could consider seeking admission through a practical legal training provider such as ANU Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, College of Law, Leo Cussen or Monash University. These providers require a work experience component. Interested graduates could approach a community legal centre about undertaking their work placement at a centre. Some providers offer a long work experience component in lieu of elective subjects which can reduce the course costs.

There are also a range of other positions in community legal centres, including policy and community development work, that do not require a practising certificate.

Other ways to get involved in community legal centres

In addition to direct employment, there are many other ways to get involved in the work of community legal centres through volunteering, nomination for boards of management, pro bono work and pro bono secondment schemes (see below).

Pro bono secondment schemes

Many private law firms have community law partnerships under the Attorney Generals Community Law Partnerships Scheme. Regular opportunities for secondment to a community legal centre arise under these partnerships. If you are working in a private firm and are interested in a secondment to a community legal centre, contact your pro bono co-ordinator to see what opportunities exist.
