Grandparents, Grandchildren and Family Law

In 2010 Moreland Legal Centre and Australian Greek Welfare Society Inc (AGWS) were successful in securing funding from Victoria Law Foundation (VLF) for a legal project to deliver information to Greek speaking Grandparents about family conflict separation and relationships with Grandchildren.  Our project commenced in March 2011. It is funded for one year.

The project evolves as a result of the experiences of AGWS free legal advice clinic where reports were coming of Grandparents being actively frustrated in their attempts to maintain contact with Grandchildren.

The product will take the form of 6 fact sheets in Greek and a seminar program which will be able to be delivered by other community agencies. The project involves developing the content of the fact sheets, translation, and focus testing the drafted products and delivering two information sessions in Greek, evaluation of the program and final report will be produced in March 2012.

The range of information to be covered is:  Financial support for Grandparents, Family Violence, Family Dispute resolution, Family Law, Child Protection and a guide to refer clients to free support services and to free legal advice services.

Our aim is to raise awareness and promote confidence among older Greek people when issues arise concerning the welfare of their grandchildren.

They will be encouraged to take action appropriate to their situation for example: to seek financial entitlements at Centrelink, seek mediation of disputes or take action in the Family Court for Orders to restore contact or to act protectively of grandchildren at risk.  Other specific options relevant to their circumstances will be identified in the material.

The fact sheets and accompanying program will be provided to the community service providers that older Greek people are most likely to consult when faced with these issues.
