Who Are We?Since 1978, the North Melbourne Legal Service (NMLS) has provided free legal advice and assistance to people who live, work or study in North Melbourne, West Melbourne, the Melbourne central business district or Parkville. NMLS originated as a community legal centre, staffed and coordinated by volunteers, in a room described by some as a “broom closet” in the Melrose Street shops in North Melbourne. As well as offering casework assistance to individuals, we are also involved in providing legal education to local community groups, enabling people to be aware of their rights and responsibilities at law. NMLS also promotes law reform where community members and the public are adversely affected in this regard. Funding for NMLS is received from the Commonwealth and state governments and is administered by Victoria Legal Aid. The Legal Service is a member of the Federation of Community Legal Centres and the National Association of Community Legal Centres. NMLS has a small number of salaried staff however, our service delivery relies largely on the dedication and generosity of volunteer students, barristers and solicitors. Committee of ManagementThe NMLS Committee of Management is comprised entirely of volunteers and is responsible for the management of the NMLS. The Commitee Members change from time to time, and a complete list is available upon request. Volunteers
During business hours, the solicitors and administrative staff of NMLS are ably assisted by a terrific team of volunteers (including many students), who supplement the limited resources of NMLS by assisting with legal research and providing clerical and administrative support. On Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8pm, a group of volunteer solicitors provide free legal advice to new clients.
