The St Kilda Human Rights Working Group
The Legal Service is one of the lead organisations in the St Kilda Human Rights Working Group. The Working Group recently held an information around:
Public Space Offences & Their Human Rights Implications
The session was presented by James Farrell, Manager/Principal Lawyer of the PILCH Homeless Persons' Legal Clinic and included information about the human rights implications of new legislation which drastically increases police powers to deal with public space ‘offenders’. These include:
- random search powers (including strip searches) in designated areas; &
- power to direct people to move-on from a certain area.
It is likely that those who will be disproportionately affected by this legislation will include those who are homeless, young people, those suffering mental illness and indigenous people as this has been the case where this type of legislation has been introduced elsewhere.
If you are interested in being informed of future information sessions and activities of the St Kilda Human Rights Working Group please contact Emma Asscher at the Legal Service via email: emma@skls.org.au to be included on the St Kilda Human Rights Working Group contact list.
