Background
St Kilda Legal Service has operated a family violence duty lawyer service at the Moorabbin Justice Centre since June 2008. The Moorabbin Justice Centre is a new Magistrate's Court opened in October 2007 in Highett. When the Court first opened there was no court support provided to applicants in family violence matters. St Kilda Legal Service initiated a Family Violence (Intervention Order) Applicant Lawyer Pilot Project in June 2008. This pilot project was extended twice but due to lack of funding the Legal Service was unable to employ a dedicated family violence worker to provide the service. During this period the role was filled by the St Kilda Legal Service principal solicitor. As part of the "Community Action for Small Courts - Family Violence Response" Project St Kilda Legal Service now employs a 2-day per week family violence lawyer.
